LAGOS, November 2, 2026 — Airtel Nigeria has launched the Airtel Open Network platform, giving customers access to live network data and a structured way to report service issues. The initiative makes Nigeria the first of Airtel Africa’s 14 operating markets to introduce this level of consumer-facing network accountability.
Background And History
Airtel Nigeria’s move to launch the Airtel Open Network platform is part of the company’s efforts to improve transparency in telecoms service delivery. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the initiative aligns with the commission’s efforts to promote transparency in telecommunications, including the development of public coverage maps, consumer satisfaction surveys, and independent network performance assessments. The NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, commended Airtel for the initiative, stressing that its effectiveness depends on the company’s response to customer complaints.
How It Works
The Airtel Open Network platform provides customers with access to information about active network sites, facilities undergoing upgrades, and planned deployments. Customers can also submit complaints by identifying the affected location, duration of the problem, and whether it occurs indoors or outdoors. According to Airtel, the information will provide its technical teams with more specific details to investigate service complaints and determine appropriate solutions. The platform transforms complex network telemetry into accessible, actionable insights for Airtel and its customers, as stated by Airtel CEO Dinesh Balsingh.
The Numbers
Airtel Africa reported first-half revenue of $3.8 billion, with Nigeria being its biggest market, growing 27%. The company absorbed about 90% of the impact from rising fuel costs in the second quarter. Airtel Africa’s underlying EBITDA margin reached a record 50.4% in the second quarter. The company’s customer base grew 11.6% to 193.9 million, with mobile money users climbing 22.4% to 60.9 million.
What It Means Now
The launch of the Airtel Open Network platform is significant for Airtel Africa, as it demonstrates the company’s commitment to transparency and customer satisfaction. As Dr. Maida noted, the presence of network infrastructure in a location does not automatically guarantee reliable connectivity or a particular internet speed. The platform’s effectiveness will depend on Airtel’s response to customer complaints, and the company must ensure that the information displayed on the platform is accurate, understandable, and regularly updated. As Airtel CEO Dinesh Balsingh stated, “Trust grows when customers can see what is happening and know that their concerns are being heard.” The platform is a step towards building trust with customers and providing them with a more direct way to report service issues.
