Jarecki Bypasses Major Streamers, Releases Assange Film via Bitcoin with Block’s Help

Eugene Jarecki’s new documentary on Julian Assange will hit audiences through the Bitcoin network, not through Netflix or Amazon. The director is blunt about why: the major streaming platforms, he says, “were never going to touch” the subject. So he built a different pipeline.

That pipeline runs through Jack Dorsey’s company Block. Dorsey, the former Twitter CEO who now runs the digital payments firm, helped Jarecki set up what the director calls a “pre-theatrical digital release” model.

The film, titled “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” will reach viewers before any traditional theatrical run. The Bitcoin community itself becomes the distribution channel and the initial audience. This is not a publicity stunt.

It is a distribution system built on the same peer-to-peer logic that Bitcoin uses for transactions. Under the hood, the model likely uses the Bitcoin blockchain for payment settlement and digital rights management.

Jarecki has not published the full technical architecture, but the basic shape is clear: the film travels through the network, not through a studio’s content delivery system. The two men were in Tuscany over the weekend for Rick Rubin’s Festival of the Sun, an under-the-radar music event. There, Dorsey held a conversation with Edward Snowden about digital freedom and the future of the web.

It was a rare public interview for Snowden, the former CIA employee who leaked top-secret documents about U.S. surveillance programs and now lives in Russia. Jarecki is an Emmy-winning American director. He knew the economics and the politics of the major streamers would block his film.

Netflix, Amazon, Apple — he believes none of them would touch the Assange story. So he went outside their system entirely.

The technical reality matters here. This is not a filmmaker uploading a file to a server and calling it a blockchain release. The film will travel through the Bitcoin network itself.

Dorsey’s Block sits at the center of that infrastructure. Block is a digital payments company, but its core business is Bitcoin.

The company builds tools for the Bitcoin economy. That infrastructure now includes a documentary distribution pipeline. What is clear is that the Bitcoin community functions as both the distribution channel and the initial audience.

The film reaches them first, before any traditional release. That inverts the normal Hollywood model, where a film premieres in theaters or on a streaming platform and then trickles down to niche audiences. Here, the niche audience — the global Bitcoin community — gets it first.

Jarecki has not released the full technical details of how the system works. But the logic is straightforward.

The Bitcoin network is decentralized. No single company or government controls it. A film that travels through that network cannot be blocked by a single gatekeeper.

That is the point. The Assange documentary is a hard sell for mainstream platforms.

Assange remains a polarizing figure. He is the founder of WikiLeaks, currently in a British prison fighting extradition to the United States on charges related to the publication of classified documents. Major studios and streamers have stayed away from the story.

Jarecki found a way around them. Whether the model works at scale remains to be seen. One film distributed through the Bitcoin network is a proof of concept.

A whole industry built on that model would require infrastructure that does not yet exist. But for now, Jarecki has a pipeline that bypasses the gatekeepers.

That is the story. Not a gimmick. A distribution pipeline built on peer-to-peer logic.

The film will reach audiences. The question is how many.
