International trade rises as commerce ministry lays out 2023 plans

For the people of Cambodia, the latest trade figures are a testament to the country’s resilience and determination. As the kingdom’s trade value increased by 9.19% year-over-year to $52.425 billion in 2022, countless lives were changed and communities affected. The growth in trade has led to an increase in economic activity, creating new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike. According to Pan Sorasak, minister of commerce, “in-depth reforms in all areas” and an “improved export competitiveness” have contributed to this success.

The numbers are impressive, with imports and exports reaching $29.942 billion and $22.483 billion, respectively. This represents a 4.32% and 16.44% increase from the previous year, resulting in a 20.60% reduction in the trade deficit to $7.459 billion. The General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) reported these figures, which demonstrate the significant progress made by Cambodia’s economy. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, fuel, oil, and food crises, as well as growing prices and the effects of the Ukraine crisis, Cambodia’s products exports and overall economy continued to develop significantly last year.

Reforms and Trade Agreements

Minister Sorasak credited bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTA) as well as an increase in exports, driven by market diversification and preferential trade accords upheld by various jurisdictions, for the nearly double-digit trade growth seen last year. The government’s decision to adopt an endemic approach to Covid management and permit the full resumption of socio-economic activity in November 2021 also played a crucial role. By removing additional restrictions that hindered trade and commerce throughout 2022, the government created a favorable business and investment environment, which contributed to the growth in trade.

The high coronavirus vaccination rates in Cambodia, among the highest in the region, allowed the government to take this approach. As a result, the country was able to minimize the impact of the pandemic on its economy and continue to develop its trade sector. The ministry of commerce’s in-depth reforms in all areas also improved export competitiveness, making Cambodian products more attractive to international markets.

Looking Ahead

As the ministry of commerce lays out its plans for 2023, it is clear that the country is committed to continuing its trade growth. The annual meeting of the ministry of trade, where Minister Sorasak spoke, discussed the accomplishments of the Cabinet-level organization in 2022 and established goals for 2023. With the trade sector expected to continue playing a significant role in Cambodia’s economy, it will be important to monitor the country’s progress in the coming year.

What to Watch Next

As Cambodia looks to build on its trade success, there are several factors to watch in the coming year. The implementation of new trade agreements and the continued development of the country’s export sector will be crucial. Additionally, the government’s ability to maintain a favorable business and investment environment will be important for attracting foreign investment and promoting economic growth. With the global economy expected to continue facing challenges, Cambodia’s ability to adapt and respond to these challenges will be key to its ongoing success. As the country continues to develop its trade sector, it will be important to keep a close eye on its progress and watch for any changes or developments that may impact its economy.
