Fiber Broadband Association white paper links fiber and AI in feedback loop

WASHINGTON — The Fiber Broadband Association released a white paper this week with a title that reads like science fiction: “Building the Nervous System of a Thinking Economy.” The substance is pure infrastructure economics. Two supercycles — fiber rollout and artificial intelligence — are now locked in a feedback loop. Each makes the other bigger.

Neither works alone. The analogy is blunt.

Think of building the highway and the self-driving cars at the same time. One without the other is a waste. Together, they change everything.

Fiber numbers tell part of the story. U.S. providers passed a record 11.8 million homes in 2025.

That pushed total fiber passings to 98.4 million — though that figure includes multiple passings of the same address. Unique homes passed stand at 84.6 million. That is 11% annual growth.

Fiber has stopped being a premium product for early adopters. It is becoming the default connection for the country. That matters because AI is hungry.

Hungry in a way that older copper or cable networks cannot satisfy. The white paper, produced with RVA Market Research, makes the point explicit: AI needs bandwidth at a scale that only fiber can deliver at any reasonable cost.

On the spending side, the numbers are enormous. Amazon alone reported $131.8 billion in capital expenditures last year. Much of that went into AI infrastructure: AWS data centers, networking gear, custom chips.

The executive summary also cites big figures for Alphabet, Meta and OpenAI. These are not pilot projects.

These are industrial-scale buildouts. FBA president and CEO Gary Bolton released the report this week. He argues these twin forces are reshaping economic infrastructure from the ground up.

The white paper does not hedge. It says the convergence is historic. It says the scale is unprecedented.

What led here? Two separate trends that happened to hit critical mass at the same moment.

Fiber buildout accelerated after the 2021 infrastructure bill and private investment. AI went from research curiosity to commercial necessity after the launch of large language models in 2022 and 2023. Now each sector feeds the other.

Fiber networks carry the data that trains and runs AI models. AI models in turn optimize fiber networks and create demand for more fiber.

That is the loop. It is not theoretical. It is happening in real time.

The white paper calls it the nervous system of a thinking economy. The metaphor is intentional. Nerves carry signals.

The economy now runs on signals. Faster nerves mean faster decisions, faster transactions, faster everything.

The practical consequence is straightforward. If a home or business lacks fiber, it will struggle to participate in the AI economy. That is not a prediction.

It is the logical outcome of the numbers in the report. 84.6 million unique homes passed is a lot. But it is not everyone.

The remaining gap matters. Fiber broadband is no longer optional infrastructure. Neither is AI.

The white paper argues they are now the same infrastructure, two sides of one build. The report does not say how long the supercycles will last. It does not need to.

The spending numbers alone suggest years of growth ahead.
