Grayscale Sees Zcash Gaining as AI Raises Financial Privacy Risks

New York, September 2 — By the numbers, roughly 30% of $ZEC’s supply is now held in shielded pools, up from approximately 8% in earlier years, and investors will note that this growth comes as Grayscale Investments argues artificial intelligence could strengthen demand for Zcash’s privacy features. The bottom line is that Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions, and its shielded transfers use zero-knowledge cryptography to validate transactions without revealing sender, recipient, or amount.

The figure that matters is the roughly 19-fold rise of $ZEC over the past year, although it remains below 1% of bitcoin’s market capitalization. Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl published the firm’s latest Stack commentary on August 31, arguing that AI is the force behind a potential third wave of public attention to financial privacy.

Pandl stated that for users who prioritize privacy, Zcash’s features could become a “must have” feature.

Privacy Concerns

A U.S. Government Accountability Office report published in March compiled privacy risks named by an expert panel, including AI cross-referencing seemingly independent data sets to re-identify anonymized information and data aggregation risks. These findings support the mechanism underlying Grayscale’s argument, although they do not specifically assess blockchain transactions or Zcash. The National Institute of Standards and Technology also states that AI creates new re-identification risks and its predictive capabilities could amplify behavioral tracking and surveillance.

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH on August 25, providing spot $ZEC exposure. The commentary presents AI-driven privacy risks as a potential source of longer-term demand, not evidence that AI has already increased shielded transaction use.

Pandl described AI as the force behind a potential third wave of public attention to financial privacy, following earlier waves during the computerization of financial records in the 1970s and the expansion of the internet in the 1990s.

Market Position

As of August 29, $ZEC had risen roughly 19-fold over the past year, but its market capitalization remains below 1% of bitcoin’s. Grayscale’s earlier valuation scenarios were described as hypothetical illustrations, not price forecasts. The company’s analysis of Zcash’s potential position in the digital currency market is ongoing, and investors will be watching for further developments.

With the growth of shielded transactions and the potential for increased demand driven by AI, Zcash’s position in the market could become more prominent. Looking forward, investors will be watching to see how Zcash’s privacy features and Grayscale’s ETF perform in the market.

As the use of artificial intelligence continues to grow, the demand for privacy features like those offered by Zcash could increase, making it a key player in the digital currency market.
