Galaxy Digital invests in platform to bring Wall Street-style controls to crypto lending

Institutional lending in crypto has long been a messy business. Terms were negotiated case by case. Collateral moved on trust and phone calls.

Risk controls, when they existed, were patched together. The whole operation looked nothing like the securities lending markets that have run the world’s finance for decades.

That is the problem Galaxy Digital’s investment in Digital Prime Technologies aims to solve. The deal, announced June 23, puts Galaxy’s money behind a company trying to drag crypto lending into the same procedural rigor that governs stock loans and bond lending. The two firms already worked together.

Galaxy was an inaugural participant on Digital Prime’s Tokenet platform when it launched on May 14. This investment deepens that relationship.

Tokenet is the centerpiece of the effort. Built in collaboration with EquiLend — a major infrastructure provider in traditional securities finance — the platform tries to import established lending practices into digital assets. It focuses on three things: standardized workflows, institutional-grade risk controls, and transparency across the lending lifecycle.

Those three pillars sound basic. In crypto lending, they are not standard yet. That is the point.

Max Bareiss, Head of Lending at Galaxy Digital, has been pushing for this kind of maturation. His view is that crypto lending cannot stay a niche, bespoke market if it wants real institutional money.

The workflows need to be repeatable. The risks need to be measurable. The lenders and borrowers need to see what is happening at every stage.

Those are the principles Tokenet was built on, and Bareiss’s influence is likely to steer where the platform goes next. Galaxy did not disclose the size of the investment.

That is common in strategic deals of this kind, especially when the relationship predates the check. What matters more than the dollar figure is the signal. A major crypto financial firm is putting capital and credibility behind infrastructure designed to make lending safer and more transparent.

That is a bet on process over speed. The crypto lending space has had a rough few years. Several high-profile lenders collapsed after taking on too much risk with too little oversight.

Those failures scared off institutional capital and left a reputation problem. The industry has been searching for ways to rebuild trust.

Standardized infrastructure is one answer. If lenders and borrowers can point to a platform with known rules, known risk controls, and full transparency, the argument goes, the money will come back. Digital Prime Technologies is not starting from scratch.

Its Tokenet platform already has Galaxy as a user. The investment gives the company both capital and a marquee name to attract other participants.

EquiLend’s involvement adds credibility from the traditional finance side. The combination — a crypto native firm, a traditional securities lending infrastructure provider, and a platform built on established practices — is the model for how crypto lending might grow up. Whether it works depends on adoption.

A platform is only useful if enough lenders and borrowers use it. Galaxy’s investment is a vote of confidence, but it is also a challenge to the rest of the industry: join the standardized system or stay in the messy one. The messy one has already proven it can break.

The question is whether the industry is ready to trade flexibility for safety.
