Ex-Coral Gables attorney starts 10-year term for crypto fraud

MIAMI, June 22 — A Coral Gables attorney has started his 10-year sentence at a Miami federal prison for his role in a billion-dollar global cryptocurrency scam. The record shows that Mark S. Scott, a former partner at Locke Lord, a Brickell law firm now called Troutman Pepper Locke, was convicted of money laundering and bank fraud after a lengthy trial and appeals process.

Officials confirmed that Scott was initially incarcerated at home with an ankle monitor pending his appeals, but has now started his sentence. The strategic context of this case is significant, as it involves a billion-dollar global cryptocurrency scam.

The Miami Herald has previously reported on how OneCoin, the company at the center of the scam, was investigated in multiple countries for perpetrating a Ponzi scheme worth $4 billion, with Scott helping to launder $400 million. Prosecutors alleged that Scott helped launder money for OneCoin, using private equity investment funds he set up in the British Virgin Islands. He administered these funds, known as the “Fenero Funds”, via an offshore British Virgin Islands firm and a Florida company, MSS International Consultants.

Assistant U.S. attorney Julieta V. Lozano told the jury that Scott “cleaned the fraud money that he knew was dirty by setting up phony investment funds and lying to banks and other financial institutions to make it look like the OneCoin fraud proceeds were actually profits from legitimate businesses that had nothing to do with OneCoin”.

The case against Scott was built around his role in abetting Ruja Ignatova, a Bulgarian émigré to Germany who was once dubbed the “Queen of Cryptocurrency”. Ignatova’s company, OneCoin, was at the center of the global cryptocurrency scam, and prosecutors alleged that Scott helped launder money for the company. The details of the case are complex, but the outcome is clear: Scott has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A short sentence sums up the outcome: Scott is now in prison. The road to this point was long and complex, involving a lengthy trial and appeals process. Federal prosecutors had indicted Scott in New York in 2018, and the case has been working its way through the system ever since.

Now, with Scott’s sentence underway, the focus will shift to the broader implications of the case. Looking forward, the key question is what other developments will arise from this case.

Will there be further investigations or prosecutions related to the OneCoin scam? The situation will likely be watched closely, given the global scope of the scam and the significant amount of money involved. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the conviction and sentencing of Mark S.

Scott mark a major milestone in the effort to combat global cryptocurrency fraud.
