ISLAMABAD, July 6 — The internet is not what it was a decade ago, and the pace of change shows no sign of slowing. Three major trends — cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence — are reshaping how billions of people connect, work, and live. Cloud computing first entered the mainstream with Amazon Web Services, launched in 2006.
Microsoft Azure followed in 2010, and Google Cloud came online in 2008. These platforms now provide on-demand access to computing resources, powering everything from streaming services to corporate data centres.
The Internet of Things, or IoT, connects a large number of devices. By 2023, there were over 15 billion connected IoT devices worldwide. These range from smart home appliances like thermostats to industrial sensors.
The sheer scale of this network is difficult to grasp, but its impact is already felt in daily life. Artificial intelligence is the third pillar of this transformation.
Machine learning and large language models, such as OpenAI’s GPT series — GPT-3 arrived in 2020, GPT-4 in 2023 — are being integrated into internet services. These systems can generate text, answer questions, and even write code, raising both excitement and concern. The rollout of 5G networks, which began in 2019, promises faster speeds and lower latency.
This is expected to enable new applications, from real-time remote surgery to autonomous vehicles. But the benefits are not guaranteed for everyone. These technologies also raise hard questions.
Data privacy is a growing worry as more devices collect personal information. Job displacement is another concern, as automation and AI systems take over tasks once done by humans.
Digital equity — the gap between those who have access to these tools and those who do not — remains a pressing issue. As the internet continues to evolve, the next few years will likely bring even more change. What is clear is that cloud computing, IoT, and AI are not separate trends — they are converging.
And that convergence will shape the future of how we live, work, and connect.
