Infineon Opens 1.4 Billion Semiconductor Plant in Thailand to Boost Automotive and Energy Chip Production

Bangkok, October 1 — Infineon Technologies has inaugurated a new semiconductor backend manufacturing facility in Bangkok’s Samut Prakan district, marking a significant expansion of its global production network. The plant represents a $1.4 billion investment and is designed to eventually comprise up to five modules, a scale that could make it one of the company’s largest backend sites worldwide. At launch, the facility employs roughly 350 workers, with staffing projected to rise to about 1,000 as the first module reaches full production.

The facility incorporates an advanced cleanroom, assembly and test lines, wafer‑test equipment and manufacturing automation, enabling the production of chips for automotive, industrial and energy‑infrastructure applications. Environmental features include water‑recycling systems, rain‑water harvesting, solar power generation and operation on 100 % green electricity.

Infineon states that the investment is part of its broader commitment to develop Thailand’s semiconductor ecosystem, including collaborations with local universities and industry partners on skills‑building initiatives. Alexander Gorski, Infineon’s Chief Operations Officer, remarked that the location “helps us further diversify our manufacturing network across regions and serve our customers with resilient capacity and great flexibility.” The opening aligns with Thailand’s national semiconductor strategy, which aims to attract roughly $80 billion in investment and create more than 230,000 jobs by 2050, prioritizing assembly, packaging and testing activities.

By adding backend capacity, the site complements Infineon’s existing frontend operations and strengthens the resilience of its global manufacturing network. The plant’s location in Southeast Asia provides proximity to regional customers and integration with international logistics corridors.

Infineon’s expansion in Bangkok supports Thailand’s ambition to expand its role in the global semiconductor supply chain, building on the country’s growing reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing. The facility adds significant backend capability to Infineon’s portfolio while reinforcing the integration of frontend and backend processes within its worldwide operations. As the first module ramps up, the site is expected to deepen ties with local technical institutions and contribute to workforce development in high‑tech manufacturing.

Infineon’s continued engagement with Thai partners signals a long‑term commitment to nurturing talent and innovation in the region. The project stands as a tangible step toward realizing Thailand’s vision of becoming a key player in semiconductor assembly, packaging and testing.
