Ether Hits January High as Whale Swaps $87M Bitcoin for Staked ETH

LONDON, September 23 — Ether climbed to its highest level since January on Monday, breaking above technical resistance and putting the $2,800 area in view as the next level chart watchers are tracking. The move came with a striking on-chain transaction attached to it. Lookonchain, the blockchain analytics firm, reported that a single whale wallet sold about 1,100 Bitcoin on the Hyperliquid platform, bought about 34,400 ether worth roughly $87 million, and staked the entire position.

That is a headline, not a rotation. Follow the money and the mechanics here are narrow: one wallet, one trade, one staking decision.

A single holder swapping Bitcoin for staked ether tells you what that holder thinks, not what the market is doing. The catch is that staking locks the coins up, which removes them from immediate circulation — but one position does not reprice an asset.

Wallets keep multiplying

The broader adoption signal is separate, and it is harder to dismiss. The number of non-empty Ethereum wallets reached a record of more than 207 million, according to the same reporting. That is a measure of addresses holding something, not of capital deployed or of conviction.

Still, it points in one direction. What makes Monday’s strength notable is the backdrop it ran against.

The Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan have both raised rates. The US dollar is firmer. And the CLARITY Act failed in the Senate.

On the macro picture alone, you would not expect digital assets to be pushing multi-month highs. So the read is that sentiment is holding up better than the macro alone would imply.

That is an interpretation, not a confirmed trend. A few days of relative strength does not settle anything, and the piece’s own caution applies: one wallet, one week, one resistance break.

What to watch

The $2,800 area is the level technical analysts have flagged. Whether ether clears it, and whether the wallet count keeps climbing while rates stay high and the dollar stays firm, is the test. Until then, the whale trade stays a data point.
