In the dynamic landscape of digital currencies, Luno Malaysia has made significant strides, processing a staggering US$1 billion worth of transactions this year, a marked increase from the US$300 million handled in 2020. This surge in activity has propelled the platform’s user base past the 300,000 mark, a remarkable growth from 180,000 in the previous year. The platform now stores a diverse array of digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin.
As the first digital asset exchange in Malaysia and one of only three supported by the Securities Commission (SC), Luno holds a commanding 90% share of the local market. Aaron Tang, the country manager of Luno Malaysia, expressed optimism about the potential for widespread cryptocurrency adoption, stating that only about 2.5% of the global population currently own digital currencies.
In recent years, digital currencies have gained popularity despite facing confusion and turbulence. The broader cryptocurrency market was hit hard in the weeks leading up to Luno’s announcement, with significant events such as Elon Musk’s decision to halt Bitcoin payments at Tesla due to concerns over Bitcoin mining’s environmental impact, and China’s ban on digital tokens as a form of payment. These events triggered a massive sell-off, halving the total cryptocurrency market capitalization from its April peak. Despite these challenges, institutional interest in cryptocurrencies remains strong.
Notable moves include Tesla’s investment in Bitcoin, US Bank BNY Mellon setting up a Crypto Unit, and Mastercard accepting crypto payments. These developments have contributed to a growing attraction towards cryptocurrencies among investors, particularly during periods of inflation stress and monetary expansion.
Since its acquisition by Digital Currency Group (DCG) in September 2020, Luno has seen a 167% increase in active global clients and a 119% expansion in installed applications. The company was ranked in the top six digital currency exchanges worldwide in the CryptoCompare Exchange Benchmark and received a top-level AA rating. Luno remains committed to working with governments and banks to provide secure access to digital currencies globally.
Looking forward, Luno anticipates exponential growth in 2021, with plans to reach its goal of one billion global customers by 2030. The regulatory environment in Malaysia has been relatively supportive compared to China’s outright ban, providing a framework for growth.
However, global sell-offs and uncertainties surrounding regulatory stances in major economies continue to pose risks. Maintaining market dominance in Malaysia will depend on Luno’s ability to navigate these headwinds while expanding its user base and transaction volumes.
