Eugene Jarecki Releases Assange Doc via Bitcoin with Jack Dorsey’s Help

TUSCANY, Italy, June 24 — Eugene Jarecki knew the major streamers “were never going to touch” his documentary on Julian Assange, so he has teamed with former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to release it through Bitcoin instead. The Emmy-winning American director calls the plan a “pre-theatrical digital release” model that will bring the film “The Six Billion Dollar Man” straight to the global Bitcoin community and the general public. The move is an explicit effort to bypass U.S. studios and streaming platforms.

Jarecki and Dorsey were in Tuscany over the weekend for Rick Rubin’s under-the-radar music event Festival of the Sun. Dorsey, who now heads digital Bitcoin payments company Block, held a conversation there with Edward Snowden on digital freedom and the future of the web.

That conversation marks a rare public interview for Snowden, the former CIA employee who leaked top-secret documents about sweeping U.S. surveillance programs and now lives in Russia. The technical reality of the release model matters here. Rather than negotiating with Netflix, Amazon or Apple — platforms Jarecki believes would not touch the subject matter — the film will travel through the Bitcoin network.

Dorsey’s Block sits at the centre of that infrastructure. The detail that matters is that this is not a gimmick; it is a distribution pipeline built on the same peer-to-peer logic that underpins Bitcoin itself.

Under the hood, the model likely relies on the Bitcoin blockchain for payment settlement and digital rights management, though Jarecki has not published the full technical architecture. What is clear is that the film will reach audiences before any traditional theatrical release — hence “pre-theatrical” — and that the Bitcoin community functions as both the distribution channel and the initial audience. Jarecki’s documentary takes its title from the reported sum the U.S. government has spent on the Assange case.

As ever with these stories, the numbers are contested, but the figure in the title gives a sense of the scale Jarecki is addressing. Festival of the Sun, hosted by legendary music producer Rick Rubin, provided the backdrop for the announcement. The festival itself is an under-the-radar event, and the pairing of Dorsey and Snowden on stage there underscores the intersection of digital freedom activism and the Bitcoin movement that Dorsey has championed.

Snowden’s appearance in Tuscany is notable. He has given few public interviews since his 2013 leaks and subsequent exile in Russia.

His presence at a music festival in Italy, alongside Dorsey, suggests the conversation around digital surveillance and financial sovereignty is shifting. What to watch next: the actual mechanics of the release — how viewers outside the Bitcoin ecosystem will access the film, and whether this model proves replicable for other politically charged documentaries that mainstream platforms decline to distribute.
