Galaxy Digital invests in Digital Prime to link EquiLend tech to crypto

EquiLend is a big name in traditional securities lending. The company processes trillions of dollars in trades. Now, its technology is being pulled directly into the digital asset world.

That is the core fact of Galaxy Digital’s investment in Digital Prime Technologies, announced June 23. The deal itself is small enough that neither side disclosed its size.

But the infrastructure it backs is not small. Digital Prime runs Tokenet, a platform that launched on May 14. Galaxy was an inaugural participant on that platform.

The investment turns a user into an owner. Tokenet is built on three pillars: standardized workflows, institutional-grade risk controls, and transparency across the lending lifecycle.

Those three things are common in the market for stocks and bonds. They are rare in crypto lending. Max Bareiss, Head of Lending at Galaxy Digital, has pushed for crypto lending to mature.

His views on workflow standards and risk controls are now directly tied to Digital Prime’s direction. The investment deepens an existing relationship between the two firms. It is not a new partnership.

It is a financial commitment to an existing one. The crypto lending space has been chaotic.

Firms have collapsed. Terms have been opaque. Counterparty risk has been hard to measure.

Tokenet tries to fix that by borrowing the playbook from EquiLend. EquiLend is not a startup.

It is a market utility for securities finance. Bringing its logic to digital assets is the whole point of the investment. Galaxy did not say how much it put in.

That is normal for strategic investments of this kind. The money matters less than the signal. Galaxy is telling the market that it wants lending to look like traditional finance.

Standardized. Controlled.

Transparent. Those words carry weight in an industry where lending has often meant handing coins to a counterparty and hoping for the best. Tokenet went live in May.

Galaxy was on it from day one. Now Galaxy has capital in the company that runs it.

That gives Galaxy a seat at the table as the platform develops. It also gives Digital Prime a major client with a stake in the product’s success. The arrangement is mutual.

Both sides need the other to make institutional lending work. The crypto lending market is still young. Most platforms are less than five years old.

Many have failed. The ones that survive are looking for ways to attract big money.

Big money demands standards. It demands risk controls. It demands transparency.

Digital Prime is building those things. Galaxy is paying for them.

Bareiss has been direct about what the industry needs. He has spoken about the lack of standardization in crypto lending. He has pointed out that traditional markets solved these problems decades ago.

His argument is simple: copy what works. The investment in Digital Prime is a bet that copying EquiLend’s model will work for digital assets. Whether it succeeds depends on adoption.

One platform with one major investor is a start. It is not a revolution.

But it is a clear step away from the Wild West model of crypto lending. That is the story of the investment. Not the money.

Not the announcement. The infrastructure.

The standards. The attempt to make crypto lending boring enough for institutions to trust it.
