Coinbase CEO defends betting promotions amid Zcash founder criticism

AUSTIN, Texas — Coinbase Chief Executive Brian Armstrong is defending the exchange’s expansion into betting-style products against criticism from Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox, arguing that adults should be free to use their money as they see fit. The record shows Armstrong added a significant caveat: high-risk products should not be the main focus for unsophisticated users. The exchange has been steadily moving into territory that looks less like a traditional trading platform and more like a prediction market.

Advanced trading tools, outcome-based products, and features that share more DNA with sportsbooks than with traditional brokerages have become part of Coinbase’s growing toolkit. Wilcox, who created the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash, has pointed out that the line between speculating on crypto and outright gambling is, at best, paper-thin.

According to sources familiar with the exchange of views, Wilcox argued that investments in assets like Bitcoin and ZEC carry inherent speculative risk. Wrapping that speculation in more exotic product structures does not make it less risky, he said. Armstrong’s defense rests on a principle of personal freedom.

Adults should be able to decide how to allocate their own capital, he argued. But the caveat about unsophisticated users reveals the tension at the heart of the debate.

The exchange is walking a line between offering choice and protecting customers who may not fully understand the risks. The Zcash founder’s critique goes to the structure of the products themselves. When the underlying assets are already volatile, adding layered derivatives or event-based contracts can amplify risk rather than diversify it.

Wilcox’s position is that the industry should be honest about what it is offering. Coinbase did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it plans to adjust its product lineup in response to the criticism. The debate comes as crypto exchanges face increasing pressure from regulators and industry veterans alike to define where trading ends and gambling begins.

The distinction may ultimately be decided not by founders but by the courts and regulators watching the space.
