MARA Moves 1,000 BTC to Exchanges Amid Miner Revenue Drop and Energy Deal

MARA Holdings has moved 1,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $82.8 million, to the Binance and Gate exchanges over the past five days. The transfers represent roughly 2.8% of the 35,577 Bitcoin holdings the company reported at the end of June, according to data from the on-chain tracker Lookonchain.

The bottom line is that the largest publicly traded Bitcoin miner has yet to provide an explanation for the movement of these assets. While exchange deposits do not definitively confirm a sale, the activity follows a period of financial pressure for the firm. MARA previously sold 23,093 Bitcoin earlier in 2026 for $1.63 billion to reduce debt and finance an expansion into artificial intelligence.

Mining Revenue and Rising Costs

By the numbers, MARA faces a challenging fiscal environment as it balances mining operations with infrastructure growth. The company reported that mining revenue fell to $174.9 million in the second quarter, down from $238.5 million during the same period last year. Management stated that a 28% drop in the average price of Bitcoin accounted for a $65.9 million decline in revenue.

Operational costs are also trending upward. The energy cost per mined Bitcoin rose to $38,690, compared to $33,735 a year ago. Management attributed this increase to rising mining difficulty, a result of more computing power coming online across the network. While MARA’s hashrate reached 70.3 exahashes per second, the company recorded a $611.3 million net loss for the quarter, with $343 million of that figure linked to mark-to-market accounting adjustments on its Bitcoin reserves.

Energy Acquisitions and Strategic Shifts

Beyond its core mining operations, MARA is pursuing a $1.5 billion acquisition of Long Ridge Energy, a gas-fired power plant. This deal includes the assumption of approximately $900 million in debt and remains pending approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Investors will note that this move aligns with the company’s broader pivot toward high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.

The company has also secured rights to a 2 GW-powered site in Matagorda County, Texas. MARA plans to convert a significant portion of this capacity for AI operations through a joint venture with Starwood. These capital-intensive projects follow the company’s earlier divestment of Bitcoin reserves to fund similar technological expansions.

Market Reaction and Bitcoin Price Trends

Bitcoin is currently trading at approximately $82,720, testing a key resistance level at $82,500. Market analyst Minga identified this $82,500 mark as a critical threshold for the asset’s short-term trajectory. If the price fails to hold this level, Minga identified $79,700 as a potential downside target for the market.

The figure that matters for shareholders is the performance of MARA stock, which traded at $7.70 premarket, an increase of 2.3% from its previous close. Despite this slight uptick, the shares remain down 30.3% for the month. In contrast to MARA’s activity, Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy Inc., hinted at further accumulation. He posted on social media that his firm had “found room for more orange,” a frequent signal of intended Bitcoin purchases, though Strategy Inc. has not yet confirmed a new transaction. Unlike MARA, which moved its coins to exchanges, Strategy Inc. maintains a policy of holding its 848,250 Bitcoin.

Financial Position and Asset Valuation

MARA’s fiscal health is heavily influenced by the volatility of its Bitcoin reserves. The company reported a $611.3 million net loss for the second quarter, of which $343 million was attributed to mark-to-market accounting. This specific loss represents a paper valuation adjustment that occurs when the price of Bitcoin drops, even if the company does not sell any of its holdings. Management noted that every $10,000 fluctuation in the price of Bitcoin impacts this financial line item by approximately $350 million.

Despite these accounting pressures, the company maintained a cash position of $421.3 million at the end of the quarter. While the recent movement of 1,000 Bitcoin to Binance and Gate has sparked speculation, analysts note that the destination of these assets—exchanges rather than lenders like Coinbase or Two Prime—makes a collateral-related explanation unlikely. Instead, observers suggest the transfers may be linked to funding the company’s capital-intensive expansion into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.
